The Lilies of the Field

by William E. Barrett. I read this book for school, and enjoyed reading it. Although it isn't a book that I would read over and over again, there are amusing parts in it and it was a good book.

Homer Smith, an ex-GI is on his way to "see the West", and stops to help some nuns build a fence. When they ask him to build a chapel, he, and everyone in the the town are sure he won't do it. However, thanks to the faith of Mother Maria (and partly the people from town, Homer gets the chapel built for "Lilies of the Field".

An Old-Fashioned Girl

by Louisa May Alcott. I read this book once before and got absolutely nothing out of reading it. However, this time I really enjoyed reading and definitely got more out of it than before.

When Polly Milton, a poor country girl, goes to visit Fanny Shaw and her family in the city, she learns how wonderful being poor really is. Although she occasionally wishes that she could dress up and be fashionable like Fanny, she keeps her simple, attractive, old-fashioned ways.

The Vision Books

These are WONDERFUL books about the saints, written by various Catholic authors. I have read lots of them and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. They are available from Ignatius Press. From Saint Therese's Little Way, to Saint Edmund Campion's adventures in Protestant England, these are all enjoyable books. My favorites are probably Joan of Arc, by Louis de Wohl, Saint John Bosco, by Catherine Beebe. However, all of them are excellent and would make very good read-alouds.

The House of the Seven Gables

by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a good book. Briefly, it is about Hepzibah Pyncheon, Clifford Pyncheon, Phoebe Pyncheon, and Judge Pyncheon. Hepzibah Pyncheon is a sour, grouchy old lady until young relative (Phoebe) comes and brightens up the lives of Hepzibah and Clifford. Clifford had spent many years in prison, on the charge of murdering his uncle, Jaffrey Pyncheon. Clifford is rather like his sister until Phoebe comes to stay with them for a while. Judge Pyncheon is Hepzibah and Clifford’s cousin and while some of his offers to help them seem kindly, he is really harsh and unjust and definitely deserved his fate at the end of the story.

The Lord of the Rings

by J. R. R. Tolkien. This is actually a trilogy, and while some might call a it a fairy tale, it is very different from fairy tales such as Snow White, Goldilocks, and Rapunzel.

The Fellowship of the Ring : In the first book, two hobbits, Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee set out, per Gandalf's request, to destroy the ring made many, many years before by Sauron. They are joined by two other hobbits, and five other companions, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir, making nine members of the fellowship.

The Two Towers : The first half of the second book focuses on the adventures of Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf. The second half focuses on Frodo and Sam, who, having been seperated from the rest of the party, continue on their way to Mount Doom, with the assistance of Gollum.

The return of the king : The conclusion, I will leave for you to find out for yourselves. However, you can comment and ask me to write a little something if you would like.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond

by Elizabeth George Speare. I read this book once before for the Literary Club which my sister and I were a part of. I recently read it again, and thoroughly enjoyed it as before. Kit Tyler, looking at the shores of New England where she is going to live with her mother's sister and her family, realizes that her life will be very different from the life she enjoyed with her grandfather in the Caribbean. This book is a good book which I would recommend for Grade 5 and up. In reading or listening to it, one learns a lot about life in New England in the 1600's.

The Hidden Treasure of Glaston

Set in twelth century Glaston, England this story is about young Hugh, whose father bring him to Glastonbury Abbey and leaves him in the care of the monks there. Hugh, along with his friend, Dickon find themselves caught in a mystery of the Holy Grail (the chalice that Our Lord used at the Last Supper). An old, supposedly mad hermit, the exciting setting, and the details of life in a twelth century monastery all add to the enjoyment of this book.

Both I and a friend who has read it agree that it was well-written, but not a very enjoyable book. On the other hand, my sister read it and thoroughly enjoyed it, so you should probably read it, and decide for yourself whether it is enjoyable or not. I would appreciate any comments after you have read it.

The reason that I read Rilla of Ingleside first was because in one of my family's Anne of Green Gables books, Rainbow Valley is listed last.

In addition to learning some interesting facts about her, we also learn about how Kateri's mother, Kahenta, was captured by the Iroquois and married a brave from the Iroquois tribe. This is a really enjoyable book.

Emily Byrd Starr has never known what it is like to be lonely until her father dies. She doesn't think that living with two aunts at New Moon will be much fun, but once she makes friends it's not so bad after all.

The Hound of the Baskervilles

by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is an exciting book about one of England's most famous (though legendary,) detctives, Sherlock Holmes. Most of the Sherlock Holmes books can be grouped together in a few large books. However, The Hound of the Baskervilles is not the size where this can easily be done. The unabrigded Puffin Classics edition is 240 pages long.

Unlike most of the other books which follow Sherlock Holmes' adventures, several chapters focus on Watson, Holmes' loyal assistant, and from whose point of view the stories are written. A Dr. Mortimer asks Holmes to investigate the legend of a mysterious hound, which suddenly seems to have turned to reality. Holmes sends Watson to protect the heir of Baskerville Hall, and later comes himself. Together the two companions find themselves unraveling many exciting clues until they come to the conclusion of the mystery.

Disney changed a lot in making the movie "Darby O'Gill and the Little People", but of course, film-makers always have to adapt a book quite a bit before making a movie based upon the book. It's still a good movie.

I read this book for the Literary Club, and enjoyed it, for the most part. I would probably recommend it for ages 12 or 13 and up.

As with Men of Iron, it's not very exciting in the first few chapters, but as you read further into it you'll hardly be able to put it down! Boys might like it more than girls, but anyone who likes to read adventure books will enjoy The Story of King Arthur and His Knights. By the way, it's long, but well worth the read.

Even when she wasn't believed by many, she did not get upset that she wasn't believed. (She was dissapointed though.) St. Margaret can teach us many virtues, especially the three following: faith, patience, and humility. This book would make a great read-aloud for a Catholic family.

Father Brown is definitely funnier. No priest but he would throw soup at the wall of a restaurant, switch labels on the fruit at the grocery store, and break a restaurant window, so that he would be followed and a criminal, (disguised as a priest, and accompanying him,) would be caught.

The "witch" was called a witch by the Puritans living in Wethersfield, Connecticut because the woman, (whose name is Hanna Tupper,) was a Quaker. I probably wouldn't have read this book if I was not in a Literary Club.

It's about a 14 year-old German girl named Janna and a 17 year-old Jewish boy named Sef. Janna goes to live with her actor-parents in a "borrowed house" that was taken from a Dutch family by the Germans. Although Janna initially sees the Nazis as rather wonderful people, she learns about what they have done to thousands upon thousands of people from Sef, and has a different opinion by the end of the book.

Marcella is the owner of the dolls. Whenever she leaves the room, or is on vacation, the dolls have all sorts of fun. They have a taffy-pull*, rescue Fido, (Marcella's dog,) Raggedy Ann gets washed, (quite an adventure,) and have lots of other fun.

I have read most of the books in this series quite a few times. They're some of the BEST books written in my opinion.

*taffy-pull: I've never partaken in one, but it sounds like TONS of fun!

When Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane find a phoenix's egg in a red rug that their mother bought, there's sure to be adventure. Their mother decides that the egg is meant to be some sort of a decoration; she puts the egg on the mantel. A few days later, Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane decide to pretend to be living years ago when people offered sacrifice. They make a fire and while playing, Robert knocked the egg into the fire. With a loud "BOOM," the egg burst open and the phoenix flies out. He then tells the four children that the rug is a magic rug, and that it can take them any place they wish to go to. The Phoenix and the Carpet is the sequel to Five Children and It, and the prequel to The Story of the Amulet. It's an EXCELLENT book and would make a GREAT read-aloud.

Thomas Becket was loved and respected by the people of England. As Archbishop Thomas Becket's "relatives" were travelling to France after being exiled, they encouraged each other by speaking about their beloved Archbishop. Brother Oswin happily shared with Simon, "I have as little connection with the Archbishop as you yourself, my poor lad. But let us find honor at being named his men by no less than the King of England!" (p. 32) Later, when the Archbishop's ship came to the shore of England, many people joyfully greeted him, running into the water to climb aboard the ship to meet him. When Thomas Becket arrived in Canterbury, England, the people threw brightly-colored cloaks and capes, and beech, oak, yew, and holly branches down for their much-loved Archbishop. Thus, the English people's love for the Archbishop of Canterbury was especially evident when he was in need of support.
